Handyman Duties & Responsibilities

Summary: Directs or works alone on construction/handyman projects.  Includes working directly with other Team Members and subcontractors to ensure projects flow smoothly, are completed on time and on budget with exceptional quality and client satisfaction.  Works directly with clients to ensure project success, to bid projects including change orders.  May handle ALL aspects of a project once it is handed off to him/her from Sales.  Maintains a clean, orderly, and attractive work environment - includes vehicles, client work sites and company premises.  Carries out all responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

  • Ensures tools and supplies are used, cared for and maintained in an appropriate manner.  Communicates effectively with the Shop Manager when any tool/supply requires repair/replacement.
  • Maintains security at all times; Ensures client’s homes and businesses are secured according to their wishes and best practice ; Keeps client and company passwords and key codes confidential
  • Is consistently at work and on time; Arrives at meetings and appointments on time; Maintains a clean and presentable personal appearance at all times
  • Has a cell phone that is kept active and functioning at all times and is on the job with team member
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensure job site supplies are stocked, clean and organized.  Ensures there are always adequate supplies to complete the job that day/week/entire job.  
  • Turns in all receipts and documentation same/next day whenever possible.  Turns in necessary documentation at job completion
  • Is familiar with and knows how to use all common construction/handyman trade tools.  Can perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on all equipment
  • Uses, implements and sets the example of “Is this the best thing for BSLLC?” & “If the client or BSLLC Owner were to walk in right now and see me doing what doing, would it be OK?”
  • Coordinates projects, administrative tasks and daily work on time; communicates changes and progress;  Looks for ways to improve and promote quality; Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; Applies feedback to improve performance; Monitors own work to ensure quality; Proactively seeks training to improve skills
  • Communicates daily, professionally with clients with respect to schedule, work progress, quality, price and change orders (and upsells).  Promotes BSLLC services and upsells to clients.
  • Works with subcontractors and team members in a professional manner.  Does not allow others to perform to standards below BSLLC’s or allow subs to manipulate jobs in a manner that results in less than acceptable quality.
  • Works within the project’s build list, follows directions and changes behavior based on feedback
  • Is a recognized, “Go To” expert for all types of handyman work:  is proficient in plumbing, HVAC, electrical, windows, roofs, siding, flooring, construction, remodeling, appliance installation, painting, exterior maintenance including lawn and landscaping.  Knows what he/she can and cannot do without proper licensing or training.
  • Able to perform all aspects of a job (able to take over and finish every part of a job if needed), but is skilled in finding alternatives.  Includes but is not limited to plumbing, finish carpentry, carpet and flooring, electrical, etc.
  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner (thinks on his/her feet); Develops alternative solutions; Works well in group problem solving situations
  • Able to seek answers and learn.  If he/she does not know the answer, he/she gives appropriate direction, seeks the answer and implements changes as needed
  • Manages difficult or emotional situations; Responds promptly to customer needs; Solicits customer feedback to improve service ; Responds to requests for service and assistance

  • Prioritizes and plans work activities; Uses time efficiently; Plans for additional resources; Sets goals and objectives; Organizes or schedules other people and their tasks.  
  • Actively participates in Safety Program at BSLLC; Understands all safety needs; Practices safe work procedures and ensures safe working conditions; Remedies potentially unsafe conditions; Uses equipment and materials properly
  • Working Hours - This position may be hourly or salaried; Hours are to be set by the supervisor or scheduler.  This position may  require working splits, lates and involves being on-call; Works more when needed to meet requirements
  • Makes and keeps commitments; Demonstrates this by arriving on time and working through until job is complete with excellent quality.  Attends all mandatory company meetings on time and actively participates
  • Knows and follows and enforces all BSLLC policies and procedures at all times
  • After successful orientation period, Handyman may receive a company credit card for materials and supplies; Team Member must follow BSLLC policy regarding credit card use
  • Works directly with Team Members and management regarding all issues
  • Uses structured problem solving to ensure issues are promptly addressed and reoccurrence is prevented
  • Stages all tools and equipment for the job so he/she is ready to launch
  • Be capable of handling anxious Team Members and Clients
    • Work effectively with Team Members to get job back on track so job may be completed with quality and as close to on time as possible
    • Work effectively with Clients to ensure we retain Clients who experience a schedule delay
    • This may include working with Admin to contact clients, reschedule, etc
  • Be capable of disarming contentious situations

Team Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Balances team and individual responsibilities; Gives and welcomes feedback; Able to build morale and group commitments to goals and objectives; Exhibits confidence in self and others; Inspires and motivates others to perform well; Supports everyone's efforts to succeed; Balances work and home life for self and Team Members
  • Be a strong support Team Member for all other Team Members
    • Be aware of team member training and ability levels
    • Be prepared to assist other Team Members in any way to ensure jobs are done with quality and on time
    • Build strong relationships with all Team Members through interacting with them on a daily basis
  • Maintains acceptable minimum company Shop Times or other times as dictated by management
  • Keeps an accurate Time Card
  • Solicits and applies feedback (internal and external); Improves processes, products and services.
  • Assists Team Members in troubleshooting failures/issues; assesses equipment failures and makes a plan of action

Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Five to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Able to use, maintain and troubleshoot all tools/equipment.  Including but not limited to:  pressure washers, gas and electric motors, power tools, roofing guns, sawzalls, reciprocating saws, circular saws, air nailers, carpet stretcher, chain saws, ladders, lift trucks, reversing a trailer, hauling heavy loads and trailers.
  • Ability to find and use documents such as safety rules, maps, written instructions, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively with customers and Team Members.
  • Ability to write and speak clearly and informatively, edit work for spelling and grammar, fill out paperwork accurately and with the appropriate level of detail
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to use common office programs, manage an email account, navigate the web, learn scheduling software.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds; Can climb multiple flights of stairs carrying between up to 50 pounds of equipment
  • Has reliable transportation to/from work; Able to report to work on time, every day
  • Has a valid Idaho DL without SR-22 and fewer than 6 points on driving record
  • Has a cell phone that is kept active and functioning at all times and is on the job with team member
  • Able to work hours as business needs dictate
  • Able to pass a drug and nicotine test
  • Is over 25 years of age
  • Has access to a web connection every day to check company email
  • Able to bend, squat, reach for up to 10 hours
  • Able to work within stringent workplace safety guidelines (OSHA, etc); Adhere to ALL safe work practices
  • Able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
